The Mighty Amazon just told me that my copy of collected King City comic series is on the way. I didn’t buy it just for its sheer awesomeness (I would ruin myself in a week by shopping that way), but also because Brandon Graham had the balls to post a torrent of a pirate scan of his book on his own Twitter (follow @royaboiler). Many independent comic writers support the online sharing, but who encourages it like that?
Anyway, The King City is really unique. Graham’s nonlinear storytelling is focused more on a character development than on the action, but he still keeps a steady pace across 400+ pages. It’s bizarre, entertaining and full of hidden puns. The characters seem like real human beings, the story (if there’s any story to speak of) moves forward through their motivations and personalities rather than senseless twists. Graham’s extremely detailed drawing style resembles something between Moebius, Mad magazine and the doodles in high school notebooks - long metaphor made short, the pictures are amazing. Oh, and one of the main characters is a weaponized cat…
Speaking of comics - my suspicion that we live in a delightful era full of cool shit is also supported by the fact that another volume of Darwyn Cooke’s Parker series has just came out. Cant wait to read it!
